Headlines - May 2009

Dear All,

This has been such a short half term and we have had to pack the usual amount of activities into it so we hope you don’t feel too swamped!

The Race Night was a great success - lots of fun and funds! Thank you to everyone who was involved.

This leads me onto the next event - the Summer Fair! The timetable sent out is a little confusing so I will clarify now. The week commencing 25th May is actually half term so we will be collecting tombola prizes and tins the week leading up to the fair. We come back to school on Monday 1st June so you can start bringing in all your toys, baskets, summer fun bags etc etc from that Monday. All other dates on the Friends letter are correct.

You should be receiving a letter and invitation for Grandparents Day - this is on Monday 8thJune. Please note this morning is for Grandparents only - we cannot accommodate aunties, mums, dads, siblings etc as the school gets very busy. The Friends have kindly offered to do refreshments.

I had a telephone call from Eco schools last week. They would like us to join in with their latest initiative. All families will be receiving a picture of a footprint. You can use this print to write your eco pledge - Eco schools emphasise that every little helps. So walking to collect the Sunday paper counts as an Eco pledge! We will also be encouraging grandparents to make an eco pledge. We will then hang the prints all round the school in preparation for Greener Britain Day - 10th July. This is also Mr Hancock’s birthday so we thought we would celebrate the two events in style. Could everyone come to school dressed in green that day? We will be doing a charity collection so please could each child bring 50p? We are going to ask Mr John – our new volunteer gardener which charity he would like the money donated to in recognition of the magnificent work he is doing on the grounds with the children.

Finally some gardening ideas you might like to try during half term!
• Make a seed picture using different types of seed
• Make some labels for your veggie patch - you could actually make little vegetables out of modelling clay.
• Grow magic beans in your garden - where does the beanstalk go?
• Make a scarecrow to protect your little plants.
• Use wire hangers to make shapes to grow ivy over.
• Talk about plant names - does the name describe the plant - eg spider plant?
• Decorate your plant pots with suitable paints.
• Start your dinner plate garden for the summer fair!

HAVE FUN !
Chris Green
