Recycling Facilities at Folly Hill Infant School

A reminder of the recycling facilities available at school:

  • Batteries – the bin is just inside the main doors, outside the adult toilets
  • Paper (but NOT envelopes) – in the large green bin in the school car park near the kitchen.

Folly Hill Orchard

Apple trees

Mr Ely is organising the growing of a small orchard at Folly Hill.  If you would like to sponsor a tree please read the letter in your child’s book bag and fill in the slip attached.

Return to school office as soon as possible.

Green Britain Day at Folly Hill

This event has been organised by Eco Schools and will be held on at Folly Hill School on Friday 10th July. You will receive a footprint as part of the Green Feet campaign to encourage people to take steps towards a Greener Britain. We are asking you to make a pledge on the footprint and return it to school any time before 10th July. Your pledge should be something you can keep doing, eg walk to school one day a week, recycle more at home, use a watering can instead of a hose to water the garden etc. We will also be collecting pledges from grandparents on Grandparents Day. We will put a trail of footprints around the school and send off photos to the Pod website.

We will also celebrate Mr Hancock’s birthday on this day - he is our very own Jolly Green Giant! Please come to school dressed in something green that day - even if it’s only a hat - and bring 50p towards Mr John’s chosen charity supporting an orphanage in India where his wife works as a volunteer.

Hopefully I can encourage him to say a few words about the charity at the end of term performance!

Paper Recycling at Folly Hill infant School

Following withdrawal of the free collection of recyclable waste by Waverley Council (see our article from December 2008), the school has been looking for alternative ways to ensure that we can continue to recycle. As a result, a new paper recycling facility has been installed at the school. This facility is for school and community use and you are encouraged to bring along your paper waste for disposal.

So, please use our new paper recycling facility – but NO ENVELOPES PLEASE.  We plan to use the money we raise to pay for recycling facilities for other items such as cardboard.

Remember you can now recycle hard plastics at Sainsbury Water Lane.

New Bike Rack at Folly Hill

We are absolutely delighted with our new bike rack - we didn’t dream it would be so substantial and decorative! Please feel free to leave your bike in the rack - you may be advised to lock it up as the school cannot take responsibility for the bikes.

I would like to formally thank Charlotte Rowlands for all her hard work - she looked at a huge range of racks and compared them, talked to contractors about the decking, organised placing and building of the rack and produced a full report for the Friends in order for a final decision to be made. The rack was paid for through our Travel Plan. Charlotte you are such a star - people such as you make the school a better place for everyone. We are very lucky at Folly Hill to have so many stars!

The Farnham Herald is coming to take a photo on Wednesday 10th, so lots of bikes on that day please!

Blue Tits at Folly Hill

This year (2009) we have Blue Tits nesting in our bird box with the bird cam. This is the 3rd year running that there has been a little family in the box!

Living Eggs

10 eggs were delivered on 23rd February and by Thursday five had hatched. Their brooder is in the school hall. The children have been looking at the life cycle of a hen and have had the opportunity to handle the chicks. If you haven’t had a chance to see them, please make sure you visit them in the school hall before Friday when they leave.

Battery Recycling

We now have a box for recycling batteries - it is just outside the adult toilets in the school corridor. Please dispose of your batteries sensibly for the sake of the planet!

Bird Cam

Our bird cam will soon be back in action! We have a camera installed in one of the bird boxes at the front of the school. Last year we were lucky enough to see Blue Tits nesting and hatching their eggs.

We also have Living Eggs arriving in school after half term so hopefully the children will all get the chance to see chicks hatching and growing!

Bright Green Kids

A site that brings together cool eco ideas. Made by children, for children (at heart).
Mrs Green found this web site. I really liked the bicycle powered smoothie.
