WWF Earth Hour

Wear something bright - turn off the light!

Folly Hill School has signed up to be part of Earth Hour on Saturday 27th March.  We will be joining people around the world to turn off our lights for 1 hour.  For more information visit WWF Earth Hour and sign-up!

Unite with schools across the UK, and the world, to make a bold statement about the need to care about the people, places and wildlife of this planet - now and for future generations.

Climate change is one of the most serious problems we face - changing weather patterns, warming seas and melting ice are devastating for both people and wildlife. Urgent global action is needed if we are to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and safeguard our world. Earth Hour is your chance to lend your voice.

Help for Heroes

Nicky and Tony from Help for Heroes came and talked to the children in assembly this week about how the money they raise is spent.
If you would like to join us for our walk in Farnham Park to support our heroes please get a sponsor form from Dave Hancock.

Quality in Extended Services

I am delighted to tell you that our Confederation - the Weyside Confederation - has achieved the QES award.  This is an award which recognises the joint working in Confederations to deliver the core offer of out of school activities, child care, parenting support, access to external support such as home/school link worker and community use of schools.

Our Confederation is the smallest in Surrey - Badshot Lea, Farnham Heath End, Folly Hill, Hale, Potters Gate, Weybourne and William Cobbett - so it is quite an achievement to achieve this award.

Many of our services will now be delivered through the Children’s Centre at Hale School.  Part of the centre will open in April.  Helen James is the manager of the Hale Children’s Centre and she has visited to ask what the needs of our school are.

Parking around school

Some of our neighbours continue to be highly irritated by the parking situation - please park with consideration and maybe think about parking your car a little away from the school and walking the last 100 metres or so.

Haiti fundraiser a huge success

On Wednesday 10th February 2010, Folly Hill Infant School joined with their local community to raise funds for Save the Children's Haiti appeal.

The aim of the evening was to make our friends and neighbours feel special and pampered whilst raising lots of money for a good cause.

We made an incredible £2,373.11!

Features of the evening included a range of therapies organised by local therapist Yvonne Herrington. Community and school members also supplied a chocolate fountain, cake stall, books, silent auctions, soft drinks and raffle.

Many prizes were donated by local businesses and a special thank you should go to Boots the Chemist in Farnham who donated a huge range of goods which sold in goodie bags, tombola and raffle.

We were overwhelmed by the help and support we received from the local community and would like to thank everyone involved. There was an incredible atmosphere - fun, relaxed yet purposeful.

The evening was dedicated in loving memory of Jane Bell - local resident and organiser of the first Ladies Night at Folly Hill 20 years ago.

Folly Hill School to Collect Stamps for Hearing Dogs

Have you ever wondered what to do with all those stamps which come on your Christmas envelopes?

Well this year collect them and bring them to school in January. We are entering a competition to see which school can collect the most stamps. If we win we get some recycled outdoor furniture. All money raised from the stamps will go to Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

Comenius Project Gathers Momentum

Comenius MapOne of our School Improvement Plan targets this year is to develop our European relationships through funding from the Comenius project. We hope to eventually gain International status - we have already achieved Foundation and Intermediate levels!

Six teachers from Austria and three from Sweden were with us from 11th – 13th November. We also worked with a team of staff from Hale School. The European teachers read seasonal stories to some of the children and worked with the children on various activities. We had our Conference at the castle when we discussed next steps for The European Reading Circle. Look out for the photo in The Farnham Herald!

Comenius

I have now completed my Comenius workshop and funding has been received to begin our European project.  The Comenius project is funded by the British Council and encourages schools from across Europe to apply for funding to work on joint projects in order to enrich the learning of the children in their schools.

We are working with Slagstaskolan [translate] in Sweden, Hale School in Farnham and Volksschule Absdorf [translate] and Volksschule Stainach in Austria on developing reading skills – both through sharing books, assessment opportunities and communication through IT.

Our first meeting is here in Farnham on the 11th- 13th November.  I hope you will take the opportunity to welcome our visitors.

Parking plea

Please can parents ensure they park their cars considerately around the school at drop-off and pick-up times. We have had a complaint from a resident who was unable to get their car down Coniston Drive due to double-parking, and another has informed us that the exit from their drive was blocked.

Maypole Dancing at Hale Carnival 2009

Folly Hill Infant School will be taking part in the Hale Carnival on July 4th as pupils brush up their Maypole dancing skills. Children will also be following a float organised by the Friends.

Thank you to all those who have agreed to support the school. We will be meeting on the Green at 3.15pm. Children should come dressed in clothes and footwear suitable for dancing in. This event promises to be great fun so do come along. Please ensure you stay near at all times in order to collect your child as soon as the dancing ends.
