This week at Folly Hill School

I am sitting at my desk and can lots of happy sounds from outside. Moonbeam Class have finished their assessments and are now having some outdoor learning time building shelters and loving it! Thanks to Mrs Helliwell for organising all the helpers, materials etc.

A huge well done to Mrs Stride for working with the children to make the assessments as relaxed as possible and thank you for doing all that marking!

Mr Eva and Mrs Norbury have been teaching the children the Olympic dance- you will see it performed at the opening of the summer fair.

Folly Hill School Achieves Outstanding in Recent Ofsted Inspection

Following a visit from Ofsted Inspectors on 17 and 18 November 2010, Folly Hill Infant school has been judged as an Outstanding school and is now considered to be one of the top 8% of Primary Schools nationally.

Although Folly Hill Infant school is renowned for its friendly, nurturing environment, at the last inspection in 2007, Folly Hill was judged to be Good with Outstanding elements. Since then there have been improvements in pupil assessment, safeguarding and in school leadership. Expectations of children's achievements are higher and our Outstanding teachers ensure that children fulfil their potential. Local and international community links have been forged with a view to helping children understand their English heritage within a global context.

Folly Hill School excels in enriching its children's learning. This year alone, we are proud to;

  • be an Eco School
  • be a Healthy School
  • embed safeguarding in everything we do
  • have achieved ICT mark
  • have been awarded Silver Artsmark
  • be a part of the Comenius project International Award
  • have been awarded Best In Class and Most Original Entry in the Hale Carnival procession
  • have won the Infant Swimming Gala
  • be growing an orchard
  • have the best school garden in the county - South East in Bloom

This list is not exhaustive and our achievements are possible only through the dedication of all members of the school community. This is reflected in the inspection report. During the Inspection, the school was judged in 4 areas;

  1. Outcomes for individuals and groups of pupils - Outstanding
  2. How effective is the provision - Outstanding
  3. How effective are leadership and management - Outstanding
  4. Early Years Foundation Stage - Good

Provision within the Early Years Foundation Stage had been targeted already for improvement, particularly in Outdoors learning. The Ofsted judgement confirms our view that resources be targeted in this area.

Overall Inspection judgements were;

  • Overall effectiveness: how good is the school - Outstanding
  • The school's capacity for sustained improvement - Outstanding

The Inspector was overwhelmed by the response from parents. This is what he reported on Parents' Views;

There was a high rate of return of completed questionnaires. All parents and carers agreed that the school is well led and managed, and most strongly agreed. All also feel that the school keeps their child safe, and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Nearly all feel well informed about their children's progress, and think they are making enough progress. Almost all parents and carers believe that the quality of teaching is good and the school deals effectively with unacceptable behaviour.

The Head Teacher and Governors would like to congratulate and thank all members of the school community who make it the unique place that it is.

If you would like to scrutinise the report for yourself, including the letter to pupils, visit the school's page on the OFSTED website, or you may download a pdf copy here.
